Mixed Media Collage material

Today's inspiration from me (Ellie) will be creating a basic surface for your stash to easily tear and use as collage material on any project.

What am I talking about?

Creating background papers for collage. I saw a You Tube video from Susanne Rose, the owner of Rubber Dance as you certainly know, creating background papers on rice paper on the gelliplate.

I had an 'aha' moment and decided to share this way of making collage papers.

Basically you need a very thin paper, rice paper, or even thinner: tissue paper. The better it collages without showing an edge where it gets decoupaged to, the better it is to use in collages.

I mostly chose background and script stamps as they can easily be used in a background as collage material.

****

To show you how I use this on a project, I've made a collage in an art journal with gesso and color.

Tear the paper to pieces, easy way is to use a thin wet brush and mark the line you want it to tear, then tear along that line.
Use (water diluted) decoupage glue to adhere some of the tissue paper to the page.
Leave to dry.

Scribble with Neocolor II crayons onto the page as shown.

Use gesso on a brush to blend the colors. Clean the brush when the gesso gets too colored. Leave to dry.
Add a layer of white gesso to tone certain areas down.
I also scribble in the wet gesso with one of the used colors.

When happy with the result, dry it thoroughly. Add white marks with an acrylic marker and tiny black spatters (watered down black gesso) to the background.

Color the focal point, adhere them to the page and add a sentiment..

Voila.. another colorful page in this Neocolor II designated art journal of mine.

Bird Ready For Spring Journal page

The birds are in our gardens; looking forward to spring... I am too!

Playing with color and stamps in a journal makes for joyful time spent..

The picture above is where the coloring of the stamped and fussy cut images still has to be done!

The background is a playful one with Neocolor II crayons...
How? Scribble Neocolors II onto the page, spread the colour by wetting it with water-diluted gesso. Try to do each color with a fresh load of gesso as it will turn muddy otherwise. For interest, add pure gesso in a few spots.

Add more stamping in the background with Mixed Media Stamps!
What is the 40 for? It's our house number in the street, the row of circles are the 'stones' around the border ..

I am ready for spring!

Art Journaling with Birdies

An art journal page from me today, a happy color one.

I started by scribbling with Neocolor II crayons vertically, then added white acrylic paints with a brush to mute them and partially overlap the colors, scribbled in it with the same crayons.

After letting it dry I stamped in the background and onto a separate white cardstock, fussycut the birds and butterflies, colored them and adhered them to the page. Only step left now was adding color to the images and some journaling words.

See you next time!

Rubber Dance Inky Friends collage

These new Inky Friends stamps make me happy.
Apart from flowers I am a real fan of insect stamps too...

I've made an art journal page for you this time.

The background? Scribble Neocolors II onto the page, spread the colour by wetting it with water-diluted gesso. Try to do each color with a fresh load of gesso as it will turn muddy otherwise. For interest, add pure gesso in a few spots.

I've added extra color to the stamped images with the same colors of Neocolors used in the background to make them pop.

As you can see, I chose to use a vertical motion to add the gesso and scribbling.

Let me know whether you'd like a video tutorial on this background technique.
